Historic Woodlawn Cemetery

Woodlawn Cemetery Genealogy Project

Welcome to the launch of our Woodlawn Genealogy Project!

There are more than 36,000 people interred in Woodlawn, and we would love to learn about the lives of every one of them!  Based on the age of our historic cemetery, each of the interred has contributed to the history and growth of the DC Metropolitan area as well as the United States of America.  Every person here is important to us, from the indigent people of St. Elizabeth's Hospital to Senator Blanche Bruce.

So how about shaking your family tree and getting involved!  Not sure how to start searching for your ancestors?  This web site offers several resources to get you started.  Within the next several months we will be offering basic and intermediate genealogy courses for all!  Find out how your family lived in the 1860s, why they lived in a certain area of town, why there are so many common names in your family...it's really quite exciting one you get started!

Once you start searching, you'll want to get involved with others on the family treasure hunt.  Join our online community to share stories, ideas, and research tips!  For those with families in Woodlawn Cemetery, gather your stories and pictures and prepare to enter a few pages in our Woodlawn Family Scrapbook!  We would love to share those family histories with the community to instill a sense of pride in our city, family, selves, and culture - whatever it may be!
